We know we should relax, but it is not always easy to know how to relax. We live in a wild helter skelter world where, although free from many of the illnesses which plagued us in ages past, we have created a new pest which has its source in our minds. Although it is just as bad to be under-excited as to be over-excited, we are here concerned with over-excitement and over-reaction. Over-reaction or response, can be subjectively pleasant or unpleasant yet equally bad. We can be terrorised just as much by desires which lead us to do thing which we, in our rational minds, do not want to do as we can by fear and anger. The lure of the cream cake, the shoppermania, gambling or the undesirable sexual experience can be just as unwelcome to our true selves as uncontrolled and anger and irrational phobias. Of course, there are the rational aspects to emotions: the desire for our partner, the fear in danger, which helps us run faster, and the anger which gives us the strength to deal with a physical threat. All aspects of emotions are, in fact, rational from the point of view of the part of us which experiences them. Yet we often respond with these useful emotions on occasions when they are totally inappropriate. One approach to dealing with this issue is to use the techniques in these pages. It works like this. You read the material. You learn to apply it to situations in life. And you learn it so well it becomes a habit. If there is any effort or 'work' involved in this it is repaid many times over by greater happiness, increased peace of mind, a relaxed body and greater control and power in life. Some say that these techniques also lead to greater health in the body. And it seems logical that decreased tension must be helpful. The good news is that oodles of research and personal experience indicate that we can choose how we feel. Biologically we are sometimes aroused, but this arousal can be interpreted by us as pleasant or unpleasant. Motivating or defeating. Our bodies determine the quantity of arousal, but we determine the quality of the arousal: whether the feeling is amusement, delight, misery, sexual desire, pain, ecstacy, or whatever! As an aside, these pages are not about 'medical' or psychiatric matters. They are intended for the normal person who is in good mental and psychological health, but needs to learn more about coping with today's crazy world. These advantages cannot be obtained by hoping for them, or even reading about them, you must actually practice them in life. First in easy situations and then in more challenging circumstances.
